European Parliament: amendment against coercive family planning practices

The European Parliament has rejected a proposal to finance programmes of forced abortions and sterilisation abroad. According to the NGO Care for Europe, the members of parliament adopted, by a majority of 372 votes against 279, an amendment prohibiting any European financing of family planning programmes using coercive or compulsory practices.

Moreover, the 2011 budget of the European Parliament henceforth sets aside funds to combat “forced abortion, sterilisation and even infanticide, which are used for example in China to impose the state family planning policy.”

Care for Europe points out that organisations such as UNFPA (the United Nations Population Fund), the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the Marie Stopes International organisation are often criticized for their cooperation with such coercive practices in China.
